2010 – a bad year, but

As I reflect on 2010, the things that come to mind first are the things that happened most recently: my lifelong friend dying and a trip to the emergency room for me. If I think a bit more, I can come up with numerous other bad things that happened in 2010:

  • Our family didn’t have a really exotic vacation this year.
  • Work was extremely busy and stressful most of the year.
  • A person I trained daily for nearly six months was laid off.
  • A co-worker and close friend of 10 years is gone from work.
  • Several other friends were laid off.
  • I moved from a nice cubicle situation to a really crappy one.
  • I have been sick more than usual.
  • We had car problems on our Vegas trip.
  • I had to speak in Church (no necessarily a bad thing,m but a stressful and time consuming thing).
  • I messed up a wedding photo shoot.
  • I needed to sell stock options at a bad time.
  • My kids had some school grades and ballroom set backs.
  • I waited too long to schedule my eye exam so I lost out on getting new glasses for free through my insurance.
  • I had my first root canal.
  • We didn’t make it to the Festival of Trees, a fund raiser for a local childcare’s hospital, like we usually do.
  • We spent way too much money on ballroom.
  • We needed a new roof on our house.

So, I think that 2010 was a really bad year for me. One of the worst, not that I am counting. I guess maybe I was due for a really bad year; however, maybe at the same time 2010 had some good things too:

  • I won an iPad in a contest and I really wanted an iPad this past year.
  • Had a great time at Lake Powell on vacation with family and great friends.
  • I had a kidney stone and not something much more serious.I had a root canal, but it wasn’t painful at all.
  • Had my first studio shoot and it turned out great.
  • Explored some new places in Southern Utah and enjoyed an incredible sunset at Arches National Park.
  • Went to Vegas with friends and had a great experience.
  • Kept my job in tough economic times when so many have been laid off.
  • Challenged by my work.
  • Watching children develop and grow.
  • Started this blog.
  • Sold stock options for a nice profit.
  • Made friends with some new people.
  • Learned how to be a team leader at work.
  • Learned about writing user interface text.
  • Learned about the scrum development method.
  • Learned about flash photography.
  • Discovered the user of Adobe Lightoroom for editing pictures.
  • Watched all three of my children perform in a dance program in the same number.
  • Had great partners for my kids to do ballroom with.
  • And a lot more that I am not going to name.

So, there really were a lot of great things in 2010 also. In fact, I need to remember that it is a matter of prospective. I can look at my bad things list and think of good things that have come out of each event also. Maybe some aren’t really great, but there are good things. In fact, I believe there are always good thins. This is important to believe because it is true, but more importantly, it helps you go on sometimes when it is difficult to do so otherwise.
